This is the first in a series of articles prepared by the AOA Health Information Technology and Telemedicine Committee (HITTC) to help optometrists adopt electronic health records (EHR) technology, participate in the federal HiTECH incentive programs, and become part of the Nationwide Health Information Network. Future articles will cover EHR certification, meaningful use standards, the selection of an EHR system, and other topics.
